Sixteen Months

This post is a little late because the USB cord for our camera died and I've been waiting for the new one to arrive.

Little Dude got to spend most of his sixteenth month travelling. He seemed to enjoy this very much, particularly the sandy parts. He especially loved eating all kinds of new foods; the only one he didn't like was poi. He's at that age where he's either unbelievably cute and sweet, or completely exasperating. Little Dude does everything with enthusiam, even things like running into parking lots or climbing on the kitchen table. His vocabulary has expanded to include "backpack" (ack'ack), surely due to the influence of Dora. He also generalized "nana" to refer to all foods, as well as to his new favorite pasttime: watching Signing Time on DVD. Little Dude has now been given license to watch one video a day after lunch and he looks forward to it all morning. I felt very gratified the other day when he pointed to our neighbor's baby and spontaneously folded his arms and rocked them. He still doesn't have very many other words, but is good at getting his point across through gestures, pointing, and a funny little dances. Little Dude has also discovered the joy of reading this month. He now likes to sit and listen to a few books before his nap and bedtime; his two favorites are also ones his sister loved at this age: Dr. Seuss' ABC and How do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? The Dr. Seuss one seems to have a particular hold on his brain; he calls it "zzzz zzz" because his favorite page is the one with the Zizzer Zazzer Zuzz. A few days ago he suddenly started pointing at a paper with letters on it saying "zzz, zzz, zzz". A connection!

So, you're saying he had a meaningful encounter with the printed word! According a research report I read, he only needs 29,000 more and he'll be a reader!

He is such a cute little boy! I will have to read Dr Seuss' ABC to Ethan, he loves the Dinosaur books. Thanks for the recommendation.
